Los Angeles Angels’ minor leaguer prospect Ben Joyce (22) showed confidence that he will overcome the 170km speed limit with promotion to the major leagues. Joyce participated in the Arizona spring camp as an invited player and shed a lot of sweat. In his recent bullpen pitching, he threw a fastball that exceeded 100 mph, creating expectations.

Joyce threw a fastball with the highest speed of 105.5 miles (about 169.8 km) at the University of Tennessee. He caught the attention of major league scouts by throwing 28 fastballs over 103 miles (165.8 km) in one game. He was selected by the Angels in the 3rd round (89th overall pick) in the 2022 draft.메이저사이트

Joyce started his career at Double-A after the draft. He pitched in 13 games, posting a 2.08 earned run average with 1 win, 1 save and 4 holds. He struck out 20 in 13 innings. After undergoing surgery to splice elbow ligaments in college, he stepped up as a fastball pitcher. He has been playing as a bullpen pitcher since college.

On the 24th (Korean time), the official major league website ‘MLB.com’ published an interview article with Joyce. The media said, “I threw a 105.5 mile fastball at the University of Tennessee and set the fastest speed in college baseball history.”

Joyce said, “I enjoy the major league camp. I like learning from the players every day. I’m accepting as much as possible. Through weight training, I became stronger and tried to become more agile. My goal this year is to advance to the major leagues. The faster I go up, the better.” I am ready to make an impact this year.”

He went on to introduce that he is concentrating on sharpening cutter-type sliders in the spring camp. He explained, “We added a new slider in the offseason. It’s a slider that’s close to cutter. I’m excited to be able to throw it in practice. I can throw a fastball, a cutter-type slider, and even a slider that curves big.”

In particular, he showed a willingness to break the highest speed recorded during his college days. “I will go up to the major leagues this year and definitely exceed the maximum speed. My body is really good. I have good speed from bullpen pitching. I think I can reach 170km. Maybe more. Everything is good. There is no reason not to.” He expressed his confidence.
