Carmelo Anthony (USA), the ninth all-time leading scorer in the National Basketball Association (NBA), has announced his retirement from active play.

Drafted by the Denver Nuggets with the third overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, Anthony went on to play 19 seasons with the New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Portland Trailblazers, and finally the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2021-22 season. He ranks ninth on the list with 28,289 career regular-season points, just behind LeBron James’ 38,652 points as the active leader.
Born in 1984, he and James are the same age and were drafted in 2003. James was the No. 1 overall pick that year, and the two have been rivals since their rookie years. Anthony is a 10-time All-Star. He was the 2013 scoring champion and won three Olympic gold medals from 2008 to 2016.
He won the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I tournament in 2003 while at Syracuse University, but hasn’t won a championship since entering the NBA. His best finish was reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2009 while playing for Denver.
After playing with James on the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2021-22 season, Anthony was effectively retired this season as he was without a team. Anthony finished his career averaging 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in the regular season.
